LETS STOP DOG FIGHTING

Dog fights occur in underground arenas, often walls and floors coated in blood from old fights. Betting takes place often times with prizes that can include bakkies and thousands of rands in cash. Losing dogs are either killed in the arena or suffer wounds so severe that they are dumped by their owners and left to suffer a slow, painful death.

As pet owners & lovers of animals, it is hard to imagine our faithful friends killing each other, however, the reality is horrific.  We can NO LONGER stand by and watch our best friends tortured and killed!

Dogfights: The evil we know happens, but do not want to see the results!

  • Illegal Breeding: Dog fighters often engage in illegal breeding operations where they produce puppies specifically for the purpose of fighting. These puppies are raised in environments where they are conditioned for aggression.

  • Stray or Stolen Dogs: Some dogfighters resort to capturing stray dogs or stealing pets from unsuspecting owners. These dogs are then used as fighters or bait dogs.

  • “Free to a Good Home” Ads: Dog fighters scour online and newspaper classified ads offering pets for free or at a low cost. They pose as caring adopters but intend to use these dogs for fighting.

  • Undercover Adoption: Dog fighters may attempt to adopt dogs from legitimate animal shelters or rescue organizations under false pretenses, concealing their true intentions until after the adoption.

  • Networking in the Underworld: Dog fighters often have connections within the underground world of animal cruelty. They can acquire dogs through contacts who are involved in illegal dog fighting activities or who supply fighting dogs to them.
  • Misidentified Pit Bulls: Many people struggle to accurately identify genuine pit bulls.

  • Strength and Betting: The size of these dogs suggests prolonged fights, which attract illegal betting.

  • Pit Bull Characteristics: Pit bulls are recognized by their square heads and powerful jaws, including breeds like American Bullies and American Staffordshire Terriers.

  • Desperate Fight for Survival: These dogs aren’t fed before fights; they’re fighting for their next meal and survival.

  • Brutal Training: Cruel training methods involving prong collars, electrical shocks, whips, and neglect turn these dogs into expendable assets.

  • Lack of Medical Care: Medical care is practically non-existent for these dogs.

  • Suffering and Neglect: Fighting dogs often endure severe injuries and neglect until they succumb, underscoring the urgency of taking action against dog fighting.
  • Stray Prevention: Support non-profit organizations (NPOs) dedicated to sterilization efforts to reduce the number of strays in our communities.

  • Responsible Breeding: Back NPOs involved in sterilization campaigns to curb reckless, uncontrolled, and unplanned breeding.

  • Ending “Free to a Good Home”: Advocate for pro-life shelters to end the practice of giving pets away for free, ensuring they find safe and loving homes.

  • Enhanced Pet Identification: Promote microchipping drives to help owners easily identify and locate their missing dogs by keeping their contact information up-to-date.

  • Supporting Abused Animals: Stand with pro-life shelters that provide second chances to both abused fighting dogs and bait dogs, showing them the gentleness they deserve.

  • Choosing Shelter Dogs: Consider adopting a shelter dog rather than purchasing a designer breed. Shelter dogs are in need of love, shelter, and safety, and your choice can make a significant difference.

  • Stricter Adoption Processes: Encourage rescue organizations to maintain rigorous standards, including home checks, background checks, and thorough paperwork, to ensure the well-being of adopted pets.

  • Understanding Damaged Dogs: Recognize that fighting dogs and bait dogs are survivors of cruelty, not inherently bad. They deserve to experience kindness after enduring mistreatment at the hands of humans.

Truth be told a dog rescued from dog-fighting, often ends up rescuing their new human. A dog’s love knows no bounds, no conditions. We owe them safety, never having to lose their babies to dog fighting. Never having to fight to prove their loyalty or to survive to suffer another day.

Sign this petition, we will help sterilize, rescue, provide medical care, and microchip.

Together, let us make it as difficult as possible for the fighters to have access, for if not us . . . then who?

How can you help to stop Dog Fighting?

After reading all this you may feel quite helpless but there is a lot you can do to help.

According to the new City of Cape Town animal keeping policy by-laws, any act of neglect or violence towards animals is prohibited, this includes organized dogfighting. Law enforcement requires sufficient evidence of these crimes being committed to intervene. Videos or photographs taken at an event are sufficient, however, they are of little use if the event is over by the time the crime and evidence are presented.
